Humane Society Celebrates National Spay Day
Feral Cat “Fix and Release” at Noyo Harbor

Feral CatsTo celebrate National Spay Day, the Mendocino Coast Humane Society and volunteers organized a “Fix and Release” Day for the feral cats living in Noyo Harbor. On the rainy day, Joyce Baker, a Humane Society volunteer, checked the traps in the Noyo River Harbor. Upon arrival at the Shelter each cat received a checkup and a rabies shot and it was spayed or neutered by the Humane Society Veterinarian. The Vet said that the 12 cats were in good health and after a day of rest, Joyce returned them to their home in the harbor.
Marcelle Linkous, a visitor to our coast from Lake Tahoe, noticed all the cats at the harbor and called the Humane Society to organize a “Fix and Release” Day. She brought her 10 traps and trained Joyce on how to safely catch the cats. Marcelle had planned to return on the capture day, but she was unfortunately snowed in.
The “Fix and Release Program” helps keep the population from growing and the boys from fighting or wandering. This helps prevent the spread of disease. An ongoing “Feral Cat Feeding Program” sponsored by the Humane Society also helps prevent the spread of disease. Well fed cats tend not to bother the songbird population and do not wander. Recently, Joyce and Richard built 2 new feeding stations for the Noyo cats and Carol Miller donated a third station. Cap’n Flints and the ice house feed the cats daily along with the Shelter Volunteer, Carol Miller. We hope to find one more business to feed the cats daily, so Carol can better take care of the other colonies located on the Coast.
The Mendocino Coast Humane Society thanks Joyce and Marcelle for making this Project a success. We also thank Richard for making the new feeding stations and Ralph at Cap’n Flints, Andy at the ice house and Carol Miller, for the ongoing feeding of the colony.
